Thanks for this post. I was at Develop in Liverpool a few weeks ago and Basher Khan from Intel said that transparent textures in Windows games can affect battery life. I've been planning to see whether it has any impact on static CSS. Your results from canvas gradients make me wonder whether there could be an impact of using some CSS3 properties extensively in website designs.

Hey Steve,

Nice article, i agree with you.

Thanks also for the x-domain pdf. I've been updating several x-domain files for clients recently and until now i was using partial snippets and real world examples to piece everything together. Hopefully this will make more sense.

I had a look at Signals recently too as i'm working on a Robotlegs port, waiting for the next iteration before i commit to a full integration tho.

Yep, all on a recently bought i5 iMac. The problem is implementation not the platform - people on Mac are actively removing Flash for three reasons - firstly because the most common implementation of Flash right now is adverts, and multiple instances of those within a page are guaranteed to take a high amount of CPU, secondly Flash is not as well optimised on OSX as it is on Windows, (this is partly Adobe's fault but also Apple's, but from a user perspective it's Flash that gets the stick), and finally because there are too many poor implementations that crash. All are legitimate reasons and Flash is suffering from this (and of course the skewed, negative position created by Steve Jobs' position statement). When HTML5 adverts become more common, users will experience similar issues I'm sure.

Whoa, what a discovery. I never knew that HTML5 canvas could use so much memory, and that you mention if it is Intel Core i5 with 8GB. Maybe it will be lowered if you use Windows. I wonder if all this time people are just arguing about video content, so they never compared flash and html5 for interactive media.

Lately people at adobe are publish their video performance improvement for the next flash player. It shown that they are able to push the CPU used significantly using GPU processing. If it's true, the html5 vs flash battle will increase to a new stage.

Thanks Moin - I get that it's a common set of APIs that will enable applications to work across devices, and my understanding is that it's a set of extensions, but what I'm not getting here is what the distinct advantages are over a runtime like Flash Player?

The main focus is not about platform independent application provisioning. Its about bringing all the different devices together to provider richer services to the user.

Actually what I hate most about the PS3/PSP keyboard’ is how easy it is to escape the whole process by accident by pressing one of the other buttons, at which point all your ‘typing’ is lost.

The PS3 on-screen keyboard and browser itself is absolutely atrocious. At least the Wii has a sense of tactile feedback when you’re selecting the letters, making them “sticky” and easy to select. Have to say, I’d rather input URLs on my phone than on the PS3’s keyboard (case-sensitive auto-suggest? wtf?)

Actually of the two I prefer the Wii for web browsing, but then I keep meaning to pick up a cheap USB keyboard for the PS3, which like the PSP, has the crappiest input mechanism ever invented.

I could understand browsing on PS3 with a keyboard, but I tried it on Wii and it’s fairly brutal to navigate.
